We would like to be able to create a label when an instance occurs where a product is a ready made item from a merchandise container to a container we use in our restaurant. The product already has an expiration date that we would like to list on a label template without having to do a full custom label.

Hello Robert, 
Thank you for your feedback. We have released the ability to add information at the time of print. This new feature I believe would be a great fit for your needs. Below I have a link to our support article on how to add items to your label templates and a screenshot of the items that are used to enter information at the time of printing.

For this specific use case, I would use the Date Time Input item, and select the format for date only. The user would then be prompted to enter in the date of the manufacturer's expiration when they print the label. Be sure to add the label as the user will see this text as the prompting information when printing.
