Rounding time

In Maine, we can round up/down to the nearest quarter hour and it would be helpful if we could do that automatically so that at the end of the week I don't have all these minutes that add up after a while. For example, if they punch out 7 minutes after their scheduled shift ending, I am able to round down, but if they punch out 8 minutes after the hour I round up.

Yea I definitely don't like this situation but personally I agree that I'd rather have them their early and clock in to work. If I am not able to catch them at least a few times "riding the clock" and police it I either need to be there more or my management needs to clue in.
To that end, we use a points system for attendance though. So you start with a certain amount and lose or gain based on tardiness, no shows, covers etc. We exchange points for cash seasonally and that helps. Would love that to be incorporated into jolt like task points (shameless plug, I posted separately on here)

This is very illegal. Employees must be paid for all time worked. If you were to be audited by your states department of labor, you would incur major fines and would have to pay the employees for their time worked.

Matthew: Is this law USA? what country

Nigel: Yes, this law applies within the United States; employees must be paid at-least the state’s minimum wage for any time worked.

Personally, I wouldn't use the rounding feature. If it is implemented, I hope it is optional. I would hope my employees show up for work early rather than late, and when they clock in and start working, I pay them for that time. I would think there may be legal implications to taking away minutes from someone who is clocked in and working.

After doing a bit of research, it looks like there are legal implications to consider when it comes to rounding punches. It seems unlikely that employers can round in a legal manner that will actually save money. In fact, with the legal options available, it seems more likely that employers will lose money by rounding.
The links below contain more information, however this issue is still very much open to discussion. We want to provide the best functionality available to our customers while helping them save money and reduce risk of liability.

Michael: If we ask them to punch in at 7am and they punch in at 6:57 and sit there h TIL there shift starts why do I have to pay for that .. I think there’s validity in having rounding option

Troy: This sounds like leadership issue if employees are on the clock and not actively working.

Michael: is this just USA laws?
Michael
Nigel: Hi Nigel, this is definitely a USA labor law however, I did a quick search and couldn't find anything as far as Australian labor laws go, so I am sorry I don't have a great answer for you there. I would recommend trying to find someone well versed in Australian labor laws to see if the same law applies

Michael: G'day Michael I have spoken to our accounting team and our law states min of 3 hours, however if a employee only wish to work less they have to sign off on it, but turning up early for work is not pay for your just "on time" . This would be a good thing for jolt to have in time clock if it could recognize early clock ins and changed them to people start time.
Michael
Nigel: Thank you for the update Nigel. Once we finish our current queue of projects and get to this one for evaluation we would love to follow up with you for more details!

Thanks everyone for your comments and votes. We are looking into the possibility of adding a setting to round to the nearest 15 minute interval, but there are a couple ways of doing it and we need your input. Would it be sufficient to always round to the nearest 15 minutes? Or would any of you need the ability to always round up (Eg. someone clocks in or out at 4:02 pm, it gets recorded as 4:15 pm instead of 4:00 pm)?
Also, would anyone need a rounding option other than to the nearest 15 minute interval? Please let us know your thoughts.
For those who do not know about the ability to flag early/late punches and block early punches, I have posted the link to the support article below. If you have not tried this yet, this should help reduce the amount of work it takes to manually adjust punches since they will be flagged for you, or you can completely block early punches all together.

Michael: Nearest 5 or 10 minute would be great and the ability to select up or down for both punch in or punch out ... you may want to sign up as a ghost user of “Deputy”.. they have perfected this option and several others for scheduling

Need to set actual clock in time to match scheduled time

I am disappointed to learn that employees who clock in a few minutes earlier thank their schedules time and clock out after their scheduled time are allowed in your system to have their minutes counted. It would be helpful to round up,or down their clock in time as the current system is greatly adding to my payroll. Changing the clock in and out times for 130 employees is extremely time consuming and a waste of management time.

much agreed. To put in perspective, an employee with a rate of $15 that clocks in 5 minutes early everyday is $1.25 (not that much). $1.25 X 10 (Average days on a full time paycheque) equals $12.50. Multiply that by 26 (Bi-weekly paycheques for the year) and that's $325. Multiply $325 by however many employees and that stacks up very quickly.
